New Pajamas is an episode of Ramona.
Synopsis[]
One night, Ramona is pretending to be a bunny. Beezus asks her why, and Ramona, to her bemusement, replies that it is for no reason. Mrs. Quimby then realises that Ramona's pajamas are almost too small and are starting to wear out, so she gives her some new ones. Ramona is very grateful, especially since the pajamas were bought new instead of being hand-me-downs. She loves the pajamas despite them being too long, and wishes she could be awake and asleep at the same time so she could know what sleeping in the pajamas feels like. Mrs. Quimby tucks her in.
The next morning, Ramona comes downstairs enthusing about firefighters (because she recently went on a field trip to a firehouse). She mentions that they sleep in their underwear so that they can get dressed quickly, then Mrs. Quimby sends her upstairs to get dressed herself. Ramona does get dressed, but puts her clothes on over the top of her pajamas.
She boards the school bus, imagining it as a fire truck, then goes to school, where she begins to feel hot with the two layers of clothing. She opens the window, then Ms. Whaley announces that the students will visit the boiler room, warning them that it is hot down there.
After the trip to the boiler room, Mrs. Whaley starts a lesson on rainforests, which only reminds Ramona of how hot she feels. Ms. Whaley then notices Ramona is flushed, worries that she has a fever, and sends her to the nurse. She finds nobody in the nurse's office, so she explains to Mrs. Larson that she is feeling sweaty.
As Mrs. Larson takes Ramona's temperature, Ramona claims that she could just be susceptible to the sun since it is summer, and the sun is closer to the Earth in the summer. Mrs. Larson discovers that Ramona does not have a fever and sends her back, but by then, Mrs. Whaley is already on her lunch break.
While Ramona and Mrs. Whaley discuss the latter's sandwich, Mrs. Whaley asks Ramona if something is on her mind, and she sheepishly admits she is wearing her pajamas under her clothes. Mrs. Whaley offers Ramona a bag to put the pajamas in, but Ramona thinks taking them off is not an option as she is going commando. Mrs. Whaley permits Ramona to go without underwear this time, and Ramona reluctantly agrees so long as Mrs. Whaley doesn't tell Mrs. Quimby. During the whole exchange, Ramona twitches her nose.
That night, Ramona goes to bed (not wearing the new pajamas since she left them at school), when Mr. Quimby enters and turns the lights out. She hides under the covers, and when he leaves, she prays not to let anyone find out about the pajamas.
The next day, Beezus has trouble vacuuming, so Mrs. Quimby helps her unplug the vacuum cleaner, while Mr. Quimby works in the bathroom and has Ramona put some magazines away. Once the vacuum cleaner is working again, Beezus messes with Ramona by pretending it's gonna suck her up.
Then, Mrs. Quimby gets a phone call, meaning Beezus must stop vaccuuming. To Ramona's dismay, Mrs. Quimby turns out to be talking to Mrs. Whaley. When Mrs. Quimby hangs up, Ramona accuses her of laughing at her and calls Mrs. Whaley a "blabbermouth" for allegedly breaking her promise. When she promises that she didn't leave her pajamas at school on purpose, Mrs. Quimby reveals that she did not know that Ramona's pajamas were at school. Beezus teases Ramona, making the girls yell at one another, and Ramona decides to run away.
She packs, while imagining her family begging her not to leave, then Mrs. Quimby enters, claiming she wants to help Ramona pack. However, when Ramona tries to lift the suitcase, it turns out that Mrs. Quimby tricked her by deliberately putting roller skates and boots in the case so that she could not lift it. Ramona then asks why Mrs. Whaley called, and Mrs. Quimby reveals that it is because of her nose-twitching, that she mistook it for a nervous tic. Ramona explains that she is just pretending to be a rabbit because Mr. Quimby had called her one prior. Mrs. Quimby and Ramona tell a made-up story about a rabbit. As Ramona unpacks, Mrs. Quimby asks her why the pajamas are at school, and Ramona explains that she was trying to be like a firewoman.
