"Rainy Sunday" is the fourth episode of Ramona.
Synopsis[]
On a rainy morning, Ramona Quimby is lazing around in bed, Bob Quimby is boredly waiting for the kettle to boil, and Dorothy Quimby is teasing him about it. Ramona is shocked to discover that she has slept in until 10:30, and the girls go downstairs, wanting to go to the fair, but Mr. Quimby says that they cannot go because of the rain. Ramona points out that they could wear raincoats, but Mrs. Quimby says that the fair is probably cancelled anyway.
Beezus Quimby wants waffles for breakfast, but Dorothy doesn't trust her not to make a mess and tells her to have cereal instead. However, when Ramona eats the last banana, Beezus does not want cereal. The Quimbys sit in the living room and complain about how they can't do things they want to do because of the rain. Ramona suggests they play Parcheesi, but the parents just grumpily say her name.
Ramona tries talking to her father, but he is cranky due to being busy studying. She tries to talk to Beezus, but she is in a bad mood too, leading to the whole family arguing. Ramona wants to play in the rain, and imagines herself doing so, but she is not allowed. Beezus is invited to stay with her friend Emily, but Mrs. Quimby says no, because the gathering is in the evening and she doesn't want Beezus to lose sleep.
This just makes the girls even grumpier and Ramona vents her frustration by squeezing out the toothpaste (arguing with her internal monologue). Beezus enters and they argue, then Mrs. Quimby hears the commotion and makes Ramona use all of the toothpaste she squeezed out.
Aunt Bea visits and wonders why the girls are in such a bad mood, and Mrs. Quimby says they are "having a difference of opinion". Mr. Quimby helps Aunt Bea carry in the box she wanted to deliver, while Mrs. Quimby scolds the girls for bickering, and Aunt Bea leaves. The three female Quimbys try to make dinner, while Mr. Quimby struggles to get into the house. He then suggests going out to dinner to cheer everyone up.
At the restaurant, Ramona meets a man, who asks if he is good to her mother, making her feel awkward. The man watches the Quimbys order food, and then the Quimbys lighten up and begin to see the events of the day as funny. Then, the man pays for the family's dinner, with the waitress explaining that it's because he is lonely.
Differences from Book[]
- In the book, Ramona squeezes out the toothpaste because she is jealous of Mrs. Quimby and Beezus's sewing projects working, but hers not. In the episode, she does it because she is angry at not being able to go to the fair and everyone else's bad moods.
